The next morning, Ava woke slowly, enjoying the chance to wake up before an alarm. Typically, mornings for Ava were a time of shrill beeps and flustered, half-awake fumbling. Working overnights at the observatory and juggling her graduate classes during the day had made her greedy for every second of sleep she could fit into the day. Luckily, classes were on hiatus and she’d been able to take time off work.

Even so, Krom made waking early worth it.

She stretched in bed, languid, content to watch him sleep. He’d abandoned his Earthling form at night, and his horns gleamed in the sunlight. She traced one with the tip of her finger, surprised by how warm they were, and how smoothly they slid against her skin.

Krom’s eyelids fluttered open.

“Good morning,” Ava whispered.

She slid against him. She’d never get used to how right he felt against her, she thought. As if his body had been made to cradle hers. She trailed soft, open kisses across the massive expanse of his neck, and his large, spidery hands clutched against her waist.

Ava grinned until she realized he wasn’t pulling her closer.

He was plucking her straight from the bed and onto the floor. She slid down with an undignified plop.

“I will use the facilities,” he announced, stepping over her.

Well.

Ava tugged on a robe. Maybe he’d really had to pee or something. She set about making coffee in the hotel room’s tiny machine and tried to look as seductive as possible when he finally reemerged from her bathroom and she offered him a mug.

He accepted it suspiciously, not meeting her eyes. “This has nutrition?”

“Um.” She shrugged. As they’d finally gotten onto a regular morning/night schedule, this was the first time they’d woken and she’d felt the need for a morning coffee. She’d forgotten he hadn’t had any yet. “A bit. It helps you wake up…”

As she realized caffeine was probably, technically, a drug, and that she should probably check to see that his species was compatible with it, he chugged it all in one go and winced.

“Usually I sip mine.” She sipped her own cup to demonstrate the technique. “You okay?”

He nodded, suppressing a cough. “This liquid is angry.”

She poured him some cold water and handed him a glass. He sipped this and ignored the comforting strokes of her hand against his back. Krom stepped backward, away from her, and she smothered a sigh.

Apparently, the day before wasn’t going to repeat any time soon. Something had him in a mood. She had a sneaking suspicion that it was because they still hadn’t found the plutonium he needed to help his ship and crew. She’d been so busy enjoying her time with him that she’d pushed that urgency to the back of her mind.

He’d reassured her the day before that his crew was okay, still well-hidden with their cloaking technology, and that some of the members were using other means of locating the supplies they needed. Even so, she wondered if the bliss of their relationship had faded for Krom and if he was now tired of her and ready to return to his ship.
